Abstract

Archives serve as repositories of recorded information. Their role in preserving authentic and reliable information underscores their significance for supporting the activities of the institutions that create them, including universities. In Indonesia, every university is mandated to establish its own university archives, as stipulated in Law Number 43 of 2009 on Archives. Diponegoro University (Undip), as a higher education institution, is also obliged to implement this legal mandate. While several studies on university archives have been conducted, research specifically examining the development of the Diponegoro University Archives between 2016 and 2024 has not yet been undertaken. This study seeks to explore both the establishment of the Diponegoro University Archives and the trajectory of its development during that period. Employing a historical method, the research relies on primary sources obtained through interviews with key informants directly involved in the founding, implementation, and role of the University Archives as an institutional archival body. Secondary sources include archival management guidelines published for use within Undip, relevant journal articles, and archival legislation. The findings reveal that the establishment of the Diponegoro University Archives was a relatively complex process. Moreover, although the unit has carried out its functions and responsibilities as a university archives, its performance has not yet reached an optimal level. Field observations further indicate that archival management within Undip, up to the time of this research, has not been positioned as a priority within the university’s institutional agenda.
