- Abstract
This study examines the relationships between gender equality, modernity, social structure, and fertility rates through a semiotic lens. As demographic indicators, fertility rates reflect underlying social conditions and cultural aspirations. Using a literature review methodology and descriptive analysis approach, this research explores how gender roles, modernization, and changing social norms influence reproductive behaviors and fertility trends. The study applies Barthes’ semiotic theory to analyze signs and symbols related to gender equality and social structures. Key findings indicate that increased gender equality and modernization in urban areas are associated with delayed marriage, greater female participation in managerial roles, and declining fertility rates compared to rural areas. However, this relationship is complex, as very high gender equality can lead to ultra-low fertility. The semiotic analysis reveals how shifting cultural signs and meanings around gender roles impact family dynamics and fertility decisions. This research contributes to understanding the nuanced connections between sociocultural factors and demographic patterns, with implications for policy approaches to address low fertility concerns.
