Website: https://icodes.um.ac.id We are delighted to present the proceedings of the International Conference on Communication, Digital Ecosystem and Society (ICODES) 2026, hosted by the Study Program of Communication Science, Universitas Negeri Malang. Held on August 4–5, 2026, this international conference serves as a dynamic interdisciplinary forum for scholars, practitioners, and researchers from around the globe to gather and address critical issues in the evolving media landscape. Under the central theme “Communication in Algorithmic Societies: Transformation, Ethics, and Participation,” ICODES 2026 examines how digital technologies and automated systems are fundamentally reshaping human connection, public discourse, and societal structures. The contemporary communication environment is experiencing unprecedented transformations driven by data-driven platforms, artificial intelligence, and automated decision-making processes. While these advancements offer remarkable opportunities for connectivity, personalized media experiences, and creative participation, they also introduce complex socio-ethical challenges. Issues such as automated filter bubbles, algorithmic bias, surveillance, and the erosion of digital public spheres demand rigorous academic reflection. Considering these changes, understanding the balance between technological innovation, ethical responsibility, and meaningful civic participation has become more urgent than ever. This volume compiles 18 peer-reviewed papers that reflect the rich diversity and interdisciplinary scope of modern communication research. The accepted contributions explore a wide range of thematic areas, including Digital Marketing Communication, PR, and Advertising in Algorithmic Environments; Digital Journalism and Media Sustainability; Digital Public Sphere, Political Communication, and Democratic Engagement; and Digital Activism and Networked Social Participation. Furthermore, scholars delve into critical perspectives on Media Surveillance, Privacy, and Ethical Communication; Popular Culture and Participatory Media; Environment and Sustainable Communication; as well as cross-disciplinary examinations of Gender, Identity, Culture, and Human-Machine Communication. We extend our sincere gratitude to all authors who submitted their research to ICODES 2026, as well as to our reviewers and the organizing committee at Universitas Negeri Malang for their dedication and rigorous evaluations. We hope that the insights and critical discussions presented within these pages will not only advance scholarly understanding but also inspire future research, ethical practice, and constructive policy dialogues in an increasingly algorithmic world. We cordially invite you to explore the collection of papers in this volume. ICODES 2026 Organizing Committee
