Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is characterized by impaired insulin secretion or impaired insulin function (insulin resistance) in the liver and muscles. The liver is one of the largest organs in the body and the center of metabolism in the body. The study aims to determine the effect of Andrographis paniculata leaf extract on liver function and liver histopathology of male white wistar rats with diabetes mellitus. This type of research is experimental using pre-post test control group design. 24 male wistar rats as samples were divided into 6 groups so that 4 rats per group. The results of the One-Way Anova statistical test showed that the significance value produced was 0.000 < 0.05, which concluded that there was a significant difference between the control group and the treatment group. Further Post-hoc LSD tests were conducted to analyze the differences in average ALT and AST levels between groups. A significance value of 0.00 < 0.05 means that the group has a significant difference between the control group and the other treatment groups and vice versa. Administration of sambiloto leaf extract (Andrographis Paniculata) at a dose of 600mg/KgBW is effective in improving liver function in Wistar strain rats with diabetes mellitus. Histopathological observations of liver tissue also experienced the most significant improvement and approached the control group compared to other groups. Sambiloto leaf extract (Andrographis Paniculata) contains secondary metabolites in the form of saponins, tannins, flavonoids, and triterpenoids to help repair liver cells that experience fatty liver and necrosis due to diabetes mellitus.
