Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is an important lifestyle related disease which carries the risk of diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy can lead to blindness, a serious disability that will significantly affect patients quality of life. This study aimed to determine the event probability and prevalence of diabetic retinopathy among diabetic patients in Kelantan from 2013–2017. A population based retrospective cohort study was conducted using secondary data obtained from the National Diabetic Registry. A life table analysis was applied to estimate the probability of developing diabetic retinopathy. Out of 1372 patients included in the study, 163 or 11.9% developed diabetic retinopathy, while 1209 or 88.1% were censored. The cumulative incidence of diabetic retinopathy increased progressively throughout the study period, reaching 2.5% at the end of the first year, 4.7% at the end of the second year, 6.5% at the end of the third year, 8.2% at the end of the fourth year, and 9.5% by the end of the fifth year. The study demonstrated a progressive increase in the cumulative incidence of diabetic retinopathy over time, with nearly one in ten patients developing the condition within five years. These findings highlight the need for regular screening and timely interventions to prevent or delay disease progression.
