Peer Smoking Status as Factor Related to Electronic Smoking Status in Adolescents

Abstract

Electronic cigarettes are products that are marketed with the assumption that they are less dangerous compared to conventional tobacco cigarettes. However, the content of electronic cigarettes is quite hazardous due to the substances they contain. The impacts caused by electronic cigarettes include the risk of heart and lung disease. Therefore, efforts are needed to prevent the use of electronic cigarettes among adolescents. These efforts can be built by understanding the influence of environmental factors, such as peer behavior, The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between gender, age, activity, peer conventional smoking status, and peer electronic smoking status with electronic smoking status in adolescents in the city of Yogyakarta. This study used a quantitative cross-sectional study from July-August 2024. A total of 437 adolescent aged 10–19 years who attend school in the city of Yogyakarta. Chi square test used to analyze data. Dari analisis chi square didapatkan hasil bahwa variabel gender showed a p value of 0.003 < 0.05), age variable also had a showed p value of 0.026 (p < 0.05). Status of conventional smoking friends showed p valueof 0.001 (p < 0.05), the status of friends who smoke electronically showed significant p value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). The results showed that there was a relationship between gender, age of respondent, peer conventional smoking status, and peer electronic smoking status with adolescent smoking status (p < 0,05).
