Abstract

The object of this study is the existence of wuli artifacts and its philosophical meaning according to Pata Dela Text of the Ngadha ethnic tradition of Flores. The basic question is what is the philosophical meaning of wuli according to the philosophy of life of the Ngadha people, which is implied in the Pata Dela text. The research used a descriptive qualitative paradigm, based on the theory of oral tradition and the theory of cultural diffusion. The primary data were obtained through field research, with participant observation techniques, interviews and Focus Group Discussions in Guru Sina Village. The data analysis and synthesis used the hermeneutic method, both for local traditional texts about making wuli necklaces, taking into account of its quantity and colors, and their use as a ritual apparatus in the light of the resilience of local cultural practices. The findings confirm that wuli necklace is not only a ritual tool, but also express the cosmic spirit (waka) and legacy of leadership of the Ngadha people. In and through the use of wuli necklaces, the subject or the user becomes a leader who is believed to be able to ‘bridge and bind’ (padha meze aze lewa) the relationship between human-beings and the natural environment, with each other, and with the Sacred.
