- Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most frequent cause of dementia, is a progressive neuro-degenerative condition that affects individuals, families, and health systems worldwide. A increasing body of data links chronic inflammation to the etiology of AD, beyond its typical hallmarks of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and tau neurofibrillar tangles. Proinflammatory cytokines, including IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-α, play a crucial role in the neurodegenerative process. These chemicals cause BBB disintegration, neuronal death, and cognitive impairment. This review highlights the inflammatory pathways involved in AD and examines the role of donepezil, a cholinesterase inhibitor used to treat AD symptoms, which has demonstrated neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties. Recent findings suggest that donepezil may modulate neuroinflammation, potentially influencing disease progression.
