- Abstract
The Luwu people of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, have a long and fascinating history, but in an increasingly globalised world, what is the status of the Luwu’ language today? Sociolinguistic surveys documenting language attitudes, patterns of use, and intergenerational transmission were conducted in two areas of the Luwu regency, one urban and one rural, and the results show that Luwu’ language vitality is vigorous in rural areas, but more vulnerable in urban centres. However, positive attitudes towards the language in all areas suggest that language maintenance and development work would be well received by the whole community.
