The 5th International Conference Entitled Language, Literary, and Cultural Studies (ICONLATERALS) 2024 represents a significant milestone in our continuing journey to foster academic discourse and collaboration in the fields of language, literature, and cultural studies. Organized by the Department of Languages and Literature, Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia, this conference has provided a vibrant platform for academics, researchers, practitioners, and enthusiasts to share their innovative research, concepts, ideas, and experiences.

This year’s conference was conducted under the theme “Beyond the Page: Reimagining Literature, Language, and Culture in a Digital Age,” acknowledging the transformative impact of digital technologies on how we create, consume, and understand literary, linguistic, and cultural products. By embracing interdisciplinary perspectives, the conference aimed to bridge theoretical frameworks with practical applications, explor-ing the dynamic interconnections between traditional scholarship and emerging digital paradigms.

The proceedings of the 5th ICONLATERALS comprise a collection of carefully reviewed papers spanning various subthemes, including Digital Humanities, Literature and Media Culture, Critical Discourse Analysis, Applied Linguistic Studies, Multimodal or Digital Literacy, Translation and Interpreting Studies, Intercultural Communication, and Cultural Studies, among others. Each paper underwent a rigorous double-blind peer review process involving three independent expert reviewers, ensuring the highest standards of academic integrity and scholarly merit.

We were honored to welcome our distinguished keynote speakers: Aniko Hatoss, Ph.D. (Associate Professor of Language Studies, Sociolinguistics, Applied Linguistics and Educational Linguistics, Migrant Cultural Studies, UNSW, Australia); Prof. Emeritus Mohamad Mokhtar Abu Hassan (Emeritus Professor of Literature and Multiculturalism, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia); Dr. Aji Setyanto, M.Litt. (Associate Professor of Intercultural Communication, Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia); and Dr. Jochem Van Den Boogert (Associate Professor of Cultural Studies, Leiden University, Netherlands). Their insightful presentations have significantly enriched the discourse and provided valuable perspectives that inform the research presented in these proceedings.

The success of this conference would not have been possible without the guidance of our esteemed steering committee, the unwavering support of Universitas Brawijaya and the Faculty of Cultural Studies, and the dedication of our organizing committee who worked tirelessly before, during, and after the conference. We extend our sincere gratitude to all who contributed to making this event a resounding success.

We are equally grateful to all presenters and participants whose intellectual contributions form the backbone of these proceedings. Your participation and engagement have been instrumental in advancing scholarly knowledge in our respective fields.

It is with great pleasure and honor that we present these proceedings to our esteemed readers. We hope that the papers contained herein will inspire further research, stimulate intellectual curiosity, and contribute meaningfully to the ongoing development of knowledge in language, literature, and cultural studies in our increasingly digital world.

Warm Regards,
Editors, 5th ICONLATERALS Conference
