Abstract

Mathematical representation skills have an important role in helping students understand concepts and solve various problems in mathematics learning. This research is motivated by the condition of students’ mathematical representation abilities that still need to be improved, as shown by the results of preliminary studies which reveal that most students obtain scores below average. This shows that students’ mathematical representation skills have not reached the expected level. The purpose of this study is to determine the improvement of students’ mathematical representation skills through the application of PhET Simulation learning media. The method used in this study is quasi-experimental, with a population of all grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 1 Sagalaherang for the 2024/2025 school year, consisting of 11 classes. The research sample consisted of two randomly selected classes, namely class VIII-K as the experimental class and class VIII-H as the control class. The research instrument is a test of mathematical representation ability that has been tested and meets the criteria of high validity. The data analysis technique was carried out using an independent sample t-test. Based on the results of the analysis, a one-sided significance value (Sig.) of 0.0000 was obtained, which is smaller than the significance limit of 0.05. This shows that H0 is rejected, which means that there is a significant difference between the two groups. Thus, the results of the study indicate that learning that utilizes PhET Simulation media provides a better improvement in students’ mathematical representation skills compared to learning carried out conventionally.
