Abstract

This study explores the integration of Macapat songs as an arts-based approach to enhance language and literacy development in primary school students. Macapat, a traditional Javanese poetic form, embodies rhythmic patterns, rich vocabulary, and cultural wisdom that can serve as a meaningful medium for language learning. Through a qualitative literature review, this research analyzes relevant studies on the role of cultural arts in education and highlights the potential of Macapat in supporting reading, speaking, and cultural literacy skills. The findings suggest that incorporating Macapat into classroom practices not only promotes language proficiency but also fosters students’ cultural identity and appreciation of local heritage. Furthermore, the integration of traditional arts into language education aligns with holistic and contextual pedagogical approaches in primary schools. This review provides insights for educators and curriculum developers on how local cultural resources can be transformed into effective learning media for language and literacy development, while preserving intangible cultural heritage for future generations.
