Abstract

This study explores the integration of wayang kulit (traditional Javanese shadow puppetry) and emotional neuroscience as a contextual learning strategy in Social Studies (IPS) at the elementary school level. The research adopts a literature review method, synthesizing current studies related to contextual pedagogy, cultural-based education, and neuroscience. The analysis reveals that wayang kulit offers a rich source of moral, social, and cultural values that can be contextualized into learning materials to strengthen character education and cultural identity. Meanwhile, principles of emotional neuroscience highlight the crucial role of emotions in enhancing students’ attention, motivation, and long-term memory. Integrating both approaches encourages active learning through emotionally engaging and culturally grounded experiences. This strategy not only develops students’ cognitive understanding of social concepts but also nurtures empathy, creativity, and reflective thinking. The findings suggest that combining cultural narratives with emotional neuroscience principles provides a meaningful, enjoyable, and holistic learning framework aligned with the goals of the Merdeka Curriculum and the competencies required in 21st-century education.
