Abstract

This study analyzes the integration of local wisdom in learning science using the context of coffee cultivation in the Ijen highlands for the purpose of scientific literacy in elementary students. Through a qualitative descriptive study, the research scrutinized the way the process of coffee cultivation and cultural heritage can be used to gather real-life learning resources. Data were collected through the observation of students’ learning activities and interviewing local coffee farmers to collect their knowledge, experience, and culture related to growing coffee. The findings indicate that the integration of local wisdom in learning science not only enriches students’ understanding of scientific principles—such as plants’ life cycles, ecosystems, and environmental sustainability—but also connects them to cultural values in coffee farming societies. Furthermore, students were more interested, curious, and possessing scientific attitudes when they had context-based learning relating to their community agriculture. Based on the research, it concludes that coffee cultivation, augmented by farmers’ knowledge and culture, provides a culturally appropriate and meaningful route to building scientific literacy in primary education.
