- Abstract
This research aims to map Madura’s culinary heritage as a medium of cross-cultural communication by emphasizing the role of women in preserving traditions as well as developing community branding. Using an ethnographic-participatory qualitative approach with the framework of Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD), the research was conducted in Sumenep and Pamekasan Regencies. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, participant observations, and visual documentation, and then analyzed thematically according to Braun and Clarke’s procedures. The results of the study show that Madura women play a role as guardians of culinary knowledge that is passed down orally across generations, as well as as a formidable economic actor. The work ethic of Madurese women not only supports the sustainability of the family, but also forms a cultural identity that can be interpreted as a symbol of communication. Culinary narratives such as the songkem duck that represent respect (sungkem) show that food can function as a cultural text as well as an instrument of gastrodiplomacy. However, the limitations of digital literacy are the main obstacle in the expansion of narratives to the global realm. This research contributes to the science of communication by showing that traditional culinary can be an effective medium of digital cultural diplomacy, while women play the role of authentic cross-cultural communicators. Practical implications include the importance of digital training, the integration of culinary narratives in GIS-based platforms, as well as strengthening cross-sector collaboration to support Madura’s culinary branding as a global cultural identity.
