Abstract

The global energy transition demands a holistic view of the externalities associated with critical minerals such as nickel. One of the unavoidable externalities of mining is land clearing, which, paradoxically to the intended use of nickel in emissions reduction technologies, results in additional emissions and negative impacts on biodiversity. This study examines Harita Nickel’s adoption of the Landscape Level Nature Risk Assessment (LNRA) recommendations, developed by PT Inovasi Digital, to operationalise corporate commitments to net conservation gain. This study investigates the ongoing process of implementing LNRA recommendations, using qualitative grounded theory and semi-structured interviews across departments. The results revealed that the conceptual understanding across departments is aligned and strong, but operational-level implementation faces challenges in coordination, continuous training, and governance mechanisms. Based on the findings, a conceptual-to-operational model is proposed to bridge corporate commitments and on-the-ground implementation, offering guidance for the critical mineral sector on implementing environmental initiatives that go beyond compliance in large organisations.
