Excavation Method and Support System Recommendation of Diversion Tunnel at Jatinegara Dam, Tegal District, Central Java

Abstract

The purpose of the Jatinegara Dam is to irrigate agricultural land in the villages of Cacaban dan Rambut. The Jatinegara Dam uses tunnel construction as its diversion tunnel. The objective of this research is to provide recommendations for the tunnel excavation method and support system, as well as to predict the tunnel stand-up time based on an empirical method derived from Rock Mass Rating (RMR). The research method comprises an analysis of geological mapping and an analysis of the rock cores along the tunnel. Engineering geological mapping was carried out with the aim of validating the Rock Mass Rating parameters that had been determined through the evaluation of rock cores. The results show that the diversion tunnel consists of volcanic breccia, sandstone intercalated with siltstone, and interbedded sandstone and siltstone. The RMR value ranges from 32-49 (poor to fair rock masses). For poor to fair rock masses, the suggested excavation methods are heading and bench. Bolts, shotcrete, and steel sets are required for the tunnel’s support systems. Poor rock mass is expected to have stand-up time in 10-50 hours, while fair rock has stand-up time in 80 hours.
