Abstract

China is urbanizing rapidly, and the development of cities at all levels and in all categories is changing rapidly. Urban competitiveness evaluation is the main method to evaluate the quality of urban development. Since the 1990s, scholars at home and abroad have conducted research on urban competitiveness, and the definition of urban competitiveness has not yet been standardized. The development process of Chinese cities is different from that of the West, especially since the 18th Party Congress, China’s economic development and urban development are facing transformation and upgrading, and the connotation and evaluation of urban competitiveness have also changed significantly. Therefore, this paper adopts the principal component analysis method to evaluate the competitiveness of 284 cities in China in the two years of 2010 and 2020 in six indicators of economic development, social development, science and technology innovation, eco-environment, infrastructure, and opening up to the outside world, and conducts inter-period comparisons, comparisons of the competitiveness of cities in different regions of East, Central and West and comparative analyses of the competitiveness of large, medium-sized and small cities in respect of the main components extracted, as well as gives the corresponding policy recommendations.
