- Abstract
In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the central government and local authorities attached greater importance to the compilation and updating of local chronicles. Given that local chronicles, which serve as historical materials for recording local systems and customs, played a role in propaganda and education, the inclusion of doctors within them showed a recognition of their behaviors and virtues. This paper summarizes the portrayal of doctors and the process by which they were constructed as local elite in local chronicles, from aspects of character, talent, reasons for practicing medicine, medical skills and ethics. However, the image of doctors was “deified” in both medical skills and medical ethics in the description, where they became omnipotent doctors and the good with long-lasting blessings. Meanwhile, the publicity and praise for the doctors also set up a benchmark and constraint on their behaviors. Such deification comes from people’s perception and requirements for doctors, as well as the needs of the education function of local chronicles.
