Abstract

The translation of culture-loaded words in Chinese classics is a topic of academic discussion. This research summarises previous studies and conducts a comparative analysis using four words from five different translations as examples, based on Eugene Nida’s classification theory. Regarding the effects of these strategies, literal translation requires the translator to convey the meaning and emotions of the original text as much as possible while preserving its structure. On the other hand, free translation demands strong creative abilities and flexibility to maintain the mood and emotions of the original text. When translating the cultural-loaded words, translators need to consider comprehensively and choose the strategy flexibly.
