Abstract

As a medium of communications in global industries, English has been required for career development. One approach that can be employed to enhance English communication competence is the implementation of Task-Based Learning (TBL). This study aims to examine the implementation of TBL in improving students’ English communication competence. This research adopted a qualitative approach with a case study research design. The case investigated was the teaching and learning process in the English for Tour Operations course by using podcast as its task. Data were collected through three classroom observations and interviews with one course lecturer and 65 students. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively through three stages, including data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. As the result, the implementation of TBL using online podcasts in the English for Tour Operations class consisted of four stages, including preparation, pre-task, task cycle, and language focus. During the preparation stage, the lecturer selected the learning topic that would serve as the focus of the TBL activities. In the pre-task stage, the lecturer delivered instructional materials and introduced various language expressions used in describing tour packages. During the task-cycle stage, the lecturer provided instructions regarding the assigned task and allowed students one week to complete it. In the language focus stage, the lecturer invited students to watch their podcasts and engaged them in discussions concerning the language features and expressions used in the podcasts. The implementation of TBL through online podcasts provided students with opportunities to engage in authentic communication.
