Abstract

Financial development is a crucial component of a country’s economic growth. High-quality financial development can provide financial assets for economic expansion and serves as a vital guarantee for national economic security. Commercial banks, being the core of the financial sector, have operational efficiency that plays a significant role in promoting national economic and financial security. Analyzing the factors affecting commercial banks and identifying effective ways to enhance their operational efficiency is of great importance. However, the academic community has not conducted in-depth research on the factors influencing the operational efficiency of commercial banks. In the context of the current national financial policy of reducing non-core activities and focusing on the real economy, this paper holds that the phenomenon of financial disintermediation in commercial banks will have a significant impact on their operation efficiency. Therefore, this paper takes the impact of financial disintermediation by commercial banks on their operational performance as the research object, aiming to draw conclusions with significant theoretical value and practical significance.

Based on a literature review, this paper clearly discusses and theoretically analyzes the mechanism by which financial disintermediation affects commercial banks. It further proposes the academic hypothesis that financial disintermediation has a positive impact on the operational efficiency of commercial banks. Data from the WIND database, covering the period from 2010 to 2023, is collected. A fixed-effect model is constructed for regression analysis, supplemented by robustness and endogeneity tests. The results show that financial disintermediation in commercial banks indeed has a positive impact on their operational efficiency, and this impact is robust.
