Abstract

Architects are often asked about architectural design approaches applied in design work. The process is necessary because each architect has a preferred approach, depending on the type, scale, and design problems. The trend shows the need to understand and study these approaches in order to determine the differences and developments in each era. An example is the three Catholic church buildings redesigned due to the severe damage caused by the 2006 Jogja Earthquake. The background, timing, and essence of the projects were almost similar but designs were produced by three different teams of architects. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the patterns and innovative approaches applied in responding to the challenges of post-disaster reconstruction of historic buildings. An exploratory pragmatic method was implemented qualitatively with a narrative study to show the phenomena of architectural design in the study areas. The results showed that the main problems of the designers were audibility, comfort, economy, readability, flexibility, overview, safety, and visibility. Moreover, architectural design offered by Broadbent was developed as a complex synthesis of several approaches based on the postmodern paradigm that tended to have nuances of neo-vernacular and eclectic aspects. Architects also used iconic and neo-vernacular approaches to solve the main design problems, which was the image of buildings. Furthermore, a pragmatic approach was applied to solve those related to comfort, safety, and flexibility, serving as a response to the need for post-earthquake safety and functionality. Iconic and analog approaches provided visual identity and symbolic meaning, while canonical was focused on the classical principles of religious building architecture.
