Abstract

Uranium is the basic nuclear fuel of the present nuclear power programme. Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), it is proposed for establishment of Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) at Kovvada, Ranasthalam Mandal of Srikakulam District of Andhra Pradesh, India. The Base line study carried out for both- monsoon seasons to measure the concentration of natural uranium and other physicochemical parameters in Ground water around NPP site Kovvada. It generates the prevailing baseline levels of natural and manmade radionuclides along with water quality parameters of the site. To establish the radionuclide levels in ground water samples of the coastal site. Uranium is a naturally occurring low specific activity radionuclide present in the rock since the inception of the earth. Groundwater interacts with the host rocks and the wet weathering process facilitate the solubility of uranium in groundwater. The influencing parameters. In the present study, an attempt has been made to study the spatial distribution of uranium in waters around the proposed NPP site at Kovvada. The uranium concentration varied from Pre- and Post-monsoon seasons.
