Abstract

This research explores how Indonesian diaspora in Japan construct representations of Japan through Instagram. The research aims to understand their motivations for creating content, the forms of representation they produce, and how social media functions as a space for informal support and connection among migrants. Using qualitative methods, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and observation of social media content. The findings show that members of the Indonesian diaspora who are also content creators often begin with the intention to share personal experiences and help others. In some cases, this motivation develops into monetization, as creators recognize the value of their knowledge and respond to audience demand. The representations of Japan in their content are shaped by every experience, including work, cultural adaptation and social challenges. Social media also allows migrants to exchange information, offer emotional support, and build a sense of community. This research concludes that the representations created by Indonesian diaspora are diverse and layered, influenced by personal motivations, digital interactions, and the broader context of migration.
