Abstract

Specifically, the technology that holds the most promise for public participatory platforms within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is blockchain. Scalability, energy consumption, regulatory uncertainty, and integration complexity challenges do not mitigate the capacity of blockchain to foster innovation for digital governance and, therefore, improvements in the realm of digital governance. Blockchain will facilitate these new models that are more environmentally-friendly, and new levels of security, as well as the development of solutions for privacy-preserving enforcement that enable the ethical enforcement of rules. The requirement for standardization and interoperability also drives the development of cross-chain technologies that foster collaboration across platforms. This paper explores the various framings of the limitations confronting blockchain in order to identify new opportunities for innovation and advances toward even supporting the establishment of blockchain as part of a new form of inclusive, secure and sustainable digital ecosystem for public engagement and governance.
