Abstract

Climate change poses significant challenges that necessitate innovative and inclusive adaptation strategies. An inclusive adaptation strategy should not only focus on the efforts generated from the scientific knowledge base, but also needs to take into account the role and contribution of local or indigenous knowledge. This paper aims to examine how innovative efforts to integrate ethnoecological knowledge with global scientific knowledge. The research was conducted in Central Kalimantan, through the REDD+ project, as a pilot project on climate change adaptation implementation in peatland areas that have been repeatedly burned for over two decades. This study is part of a comprehensive research project on social mapping and access to peatland resources, facilitated by the Kalimantan Forest and Climate Partnership (KFCP). The research was conducted using an ethnographic approach, with data collection techniques that included participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and the use of secondary sources. The data was analyzed qualitatively, using taxonomic and thematic analysis techniques. The results indicate that innovative efforts to integrate ethnoecological knowledge with global scientific knowledge have not yielded the best results due to a variety of factors, including structural limitations. Integrating two different epistemes (indigenous versus global knowledge) through climate change adaptation projects still requires creative innovations to find more effective strategies in the future. This study contributes to the efforts to promote the findings of social science research, particularly ethnoecology, in the global community’s efforts to address the threat of climate change and achieve the 2030 SDGs targets.
