Abstract

Deli Serdang Regency, particularly Percut Village in Percut Sei Tuan Subdistrict, possesses considerable fisheries potential. Nevertheless, local fishing communities remain economically vulnerable due to their reliance on catching fresh fish with modest tools, and are forced to sell at relatively low prices. To increase household income, fishermen’s wives engage in salted fish processing. However, the drying process still relies on traditional sun-drying methods, which are highly dependent on weather conditions, resulting in low efficiency and reduced product quality. Addressing this challenge, this study introduces the design and application of an innovative portable fish-drying rack to optimize salted fish production. The initiative is closely aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly poverty alleviation (SDG 1) and gender equality (SDG 5), while also supporting Asta Cita in promoting entrepreneurship, creative industries, and community-based economic resilience. The innovation is expected to enhance both the quality and efficiency of salted fish production, improve the livelihoods of fishermen households, and foster women’s empowerment through sustainable and productive economic activities.
