- Abstract
Introduction: Stress is a prevalent and complex phenomenon that significantly impacts both individuals’ emotional and physical well-being. Emotional Intelligence (EI) plays a critical role in how individuals perceive and manage stress, with EI influencing the choice of coping strategies. EI enables individuals to effectively manage their emotional reactions, not only within themselves but also in relation to others, which is particularly valuable when confronted with stressful situations.
Objectives: This study explores the gender differences in emotional intelligence and their influence on stress coping mechanisms.
Methods: The research design chosen for this study is a cross-sectional design, which will allow for the examination of the relationship between Emotional Intelligence (EI) and stress coping strategies in different genders at a single point in time.Data for the study was collected usingconvenience sampling method, focusing on individuals from various demographic backgrounds. Two primary instruments were used to assess the variables of interest in this study, the Emotional Intelligence Scale (EQ-i) and the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS). Data analysis was done using statistical methods include means, standard deviations, and frequency distributions. To test the relationship between EI and stress coping strategies, regression analysis will be employed.T-testsalsoused to examine differences in EI scores and coping strategies between male and female participants.
Results: The findings reveal that female participants tend to employ problem-focused coping strategies, utilizing higher levels of empathy and social awareness to address stress directly. In contrast, male participants favour emotion-focused coping, often relying on avoidance or distraction as a way to manage emotional responses to stress. These gender differences in EI and coping strategies highlight the importance of adopting gender-sensitive approaches when designing stress management interventions in both organizational and educational settings.
Conclusions: The results of this study emphasize the importance of integrating gender-sensitive perspectives into the design and implementation of stress management interventions in a variety of settings, including organizational training programs, mental health initiatives, and leadership development courses.
