Abstract

Rural tourism has emerged as a strategic instrument for achieving sustainable economic growth and community empowerment, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, the rapid digital transformation of tourism—marked by the rise of smart tourism, e-tourism, and digital marketing—presents both opportunities and challenges for rural communities. This paper explores the integration of digital innovation and local wisdom as a foundation for sustainable, community-based rural tourism development. Digital innovation, defined as the combination of digital and physical components to generate new products or services, enables rural destinations to enhance visibility, operational efficiency, and visitor engagement. Meanwhile, local wisdom provides cultural values, ecological ethics, and social cohesion necessary to preserve authenticity and resilience. Through a literature review approach, this study synthesizes prior research to construct a conceptual model linking digital innovation, local wisdom, and sustainable tourism outcomes. The findings suggest that aligning technological advancement with local identity fosters an inclusive and adaptive tourism ecosystem that balances modernization with cultural preservation. The study contributes theoretically by bridging the gap between digital innovation and sustainability studies, and practically by offering policy insights for digital transformation in rural tourism destinations, particularly in developing countries.
