Abstract

Himachal Pradesh is abundant with various natural, ecological, cultural, and rural treasures. During the last decade, policymakers and researchers have taken the initiative to create tourists’ sensitivity towards the cultural & natural properties of its tourist hotspots by maintaining their integrity. This study investigates the impact of sustainable waste management practices on the rural tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh. The study focuses on identifying links between increased tourist activities and solid waste generation by outlining the issues that local communities and authorities confront in managing this waste sustainably. The study evaluates the effectiveness of current waste management strategies, such as garbage segregation, recycling, zero waste initiatives, installation of waste management aids, and community-driven initiatives, by reviewing current literature, sustainable waste management practices, government policies, and report documents. The findings of the study accentuate the impact of sustainable waste management practices & techniques in maintaining the environmental integrity of rural tourist destinations of Himachal Pradesh, it also proposes benefits and challenges of sustainable waste management initiatives, as well as actionable ideas for improving the sustainability of rural tourism destinations.
