Abstract

The potential of digital storytelling and multimodality is of significance in the teaching and learning of writing narrative and descriptive texts. Few studies, however, have investigated this potential to write argumentative text that necessitates logical reasoning, critical thinking, and evidence integration in the text. This study examines the effectiveness of an instructional medium, a digital scrapbook, for the teaching and learning of argumentative text in an Indonesian senior school. It employed a quasi-experimental single-group repeated-measures design with 32 students participating. The students participated in a six-week program that implemented a digital scrapbook platform with explicit instruction in teaching argumentative writing that is structured with a claim that serves as the main argument, reasons for the claim, evidence for the reasons, counterargument, and conclusion. Data were collected from both pre- and post-writing tests, observations conducted in the classroom, as well as students’ reflections. Results from quantitative analysis indicated a significant improvement in content organization, cohesion, and the use of persuasive language (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, findings from qualitative data revealed increased students’ engagement and confidence, as visual and interactive elements contained in the platform facilitated them in planning their arguments and providing supporting claims with evidence. The findings exhibit that a digital scrapbook can serve not only as a creative passage but also as a scaffold for the construction of a coherent argumentative writing. The present study suggests that the incorporation of multimodal digital tools into EFL classrooms can foster essential critical literacy skills for the students’ academic success.
