Abstract

This study explores how pros and cons perspectives are constructed in traditional food reviews by Indonesian food vloggers through multimodal elements. The objectives of this research are to identify and evaluate the verbal and visual elements used to express pros and cons, and to analyze how these perspectives are linguistically realized. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the data are drawn from selected YouTube food review videos by two prominent Indonesian vloggers: Ken & Grat (representing pros) and Codeblu (representing cons). The researcher used purposive sampling to select reviews of similar traditional dishes from both channels. The data collection involved downloading, transcribing, and analyzing the verbal and visual elements in each review. The analysis, grounded in multimodal theory reveals that pros perspectives often feature positive sensory descriptions, value judgments, and cultural pride, supported by salience in color, close framing, and ideal-real composition. In contrast, the cons perspective utilizes more intensive relational, mental, and circumstantial processes to highlight flaws and dissatisfaction, accompanied by visuals that emphasize unappealing textures or hygiene issues. The findings suggest that while both perspectives rely on multimodal resources, the cons reviews employ verbal strategies more critically and visually emphasize shortcomings to build a more persuasive critical narrative. This study contributes to understanding how multimodal discourse constructs meaning and influences viewer perception in digital food culture.
