Abstract

Translanguaging as a pedagogical approach continues to be explored as a research topic in education, particularly in the context of multilingual classrooms. In this article, the main reasons for teachers’ use of translanguaging in vocational classrooms at an Indonesian vocational high school are examined. A descriptive qualitative case study was used. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with two English teachers and students in grades X and XI. Based on thematic analysis, the study found that translanguaging was used to assist students in thinking more flexibly and critically, to link new content to prior knowledge, and to clarify difficult concepts and terms. In addition, translanguaging was found to play a role in respecting students’ cultural and linguistic backgrounds, creating an inclusive and supportive classroom atmosphere, and increasing students’ confidence and participation. However, the use of translanguaging was observed to focus more on facilitating students’ understanding of classroom materials rather than developing comprehensive English language proficiency. Based on these findings, further studies should be carried out on how translanguaging affects specific language skills. More organized and experimental investigations are needed to show that translanguaging really does help people get better at speaking English.
