Abstract

Ship accidents can be influenced by bad weather, high waves, or fires that can sink the ship. The accident can cause fatalities, one of the causes of the many fatalities is the lack of life-saving equipment that is not well maintained. On KM. Athaya, several safety devices were found in poor condition. The purpose of this study was to determine the handling and maintenance of life-saving equipment so that it is always in good condition and can be used in an emergency. To achieve this goal, the author conducted observations during sailing practice. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative which aims to determine the facts of life-saving equipment maintenance. The results of this study were the discovery of several problems with life safety equipment such as expired life jacket lights, expired medicines on rescue boats, cables on the sea evacuation system that had dried out, brittle webbing ropes on life jackets, and expired self-igniting lights. It can be concluded that the life safety equipment on KM. Athaya has not been maintained and is in poor condition. To overcome these problems, it can be done by maximizing the maintenance of life safety equipment when anchored so that it can be carried out optimally and in accordance with SOLAS 1974.
