- Abstract
In agricultural supply chain systems, retailers are often at a relative disadvantage compared to branded suppliers. However, with the diversification of agricultural product brands and consumer demands, retailers have a broader range of alternative suppliers. Retailers can resist brand suppliers by switching agricultural product suppliers. The external options provide retailers with greater leverage in negotiations, affecting their profitability. This study is related to the literature on supplier channel management in agricultural supply chains and the literature on retailers switching suppliers. The study reviews both research areas below. The study investigate the impact of branded suppliers launching electronic direct sales channels and retailers’ external options on agricultural supply chains, based on a Stackelberg game model where retailers possess external options. The study reveals that while branded suppliers’ electronic direct sales channels harm retailers’ profits, they increase the overall profitability of the supply chain. Retailers’ external options enhance their bargaining position within the supply chain.
