Abstract

Based on the theory of basic psychological needs and the “Norms for the Development of professional style of Flight crew”, this study aimed to explore the relationship between the satisfaction of basic psychological needs and the safety style of pilots, and the mediating role of self-esteem. The basic psychological needs scale, Rosenberg self-esteem scale and self-rating scale of professional spirit style were used to conduct a questionnaire survey on pilots. Meanwhile, the relevant records of pilots’ safety style in the company and the evaluation of pilots’ safety style by managers were inquired, and the performance of pilots’ professional ethics style was collected. The results showed that the satisfaction of pilots’ basic psychological needs was closely related to their self-evaluation of professional spirit and style of work, and self-esteem played a mediating role, with the mediating effect value being 0.26, accounting for 45% of the total effect. However, there was no significant correlation between the satisfaction of basic psychological needs and the performance of professional ethics. The results of the study suggest that the satisfaction of pilots’ basic psychological needs may have the potential to increase self-esteem and thus enhance professionalism. The research results can provide a basis for civil aviation safety management personnel to develop pilot safety style.
