- Abstract
This paper explores the intersection between traditional Chinese landscape painting, Shanshui, and contemporary art. Two recurring themes in contemporary Shanshui are the cultural continuation and critical reflections on modern societal issues. Traditionally, Shanshui paintings reflect the Daoist philosophy of humanity, existing harmoniously with nature. Contemporary Shanshui builds on this philosophical foundation and reinterprets it. The case studies examine how technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR) are employed to deepen modern audiences’ understanding of the philosophies behind Shanshui. The case studies also include discussions of contemporary artists such as Yang Yongliang and Yao Lu who incorporate a critical edge into their Shanshui works. These artworks not only signify the evolution of Shanshui painting but also mark a shift in the roles of both the artist and the viewer. In contemporary Shanshui, the artist becomes a commentator on modernity, while the viewer transitions from passive observer to active participant. This essay aims to show the diversity and possibilities of contemporary Shanshui.
