Abstract

Narcissistic parenting styles has lead to an increasing research attention for its deep impact on children’s mental health. Although previous studies have analyzed narcissistic traits in children had their possible developmental trails, the influence of parental narcissism on children’s well-being remains understudied. This study reviews existing literature to examine how grandiose and vulnerable narcissistic traits in parents may shape parenting styles, emotional security, and self-concept formation in children. Grandiose narcissism is linked with authoritarian and performance-based parenting, frequently leading to emotional detachment and entitlement in children. In contrast, vulnerable narcissism exemplifies in overprotective and guilt-based parenting, fostering dependency, hypersensitivity, and low self-esteem. The study will explore the long-term psychological and overall outcomes for children raised by narcissistic parents, including heightened risks of insecure attachment, emotional dysregulation, and interpersonal tribulations. This article will also discuss parental gender differences, highlighting the need for targeted interventions. The findings of the study highlight the necessity of healthcare interventions that promote empathic caregiving, such as attachment-based interventions and public health initiatives promoting balanced parenting styles. Overall, this study aims to contribute to the explanation of the development outcomes and therapeutic solutions towards better family relationships in response to the intergenerational trend of narcissistic parenting.
