Abstract

Against the backdrop of emerging engineering education, and to address the longstanding issue of “emphasizing theory while neglecting practice” in traditional software engineering instruction, this paper proposes a teaching model that integrates the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) framework with Project-Based Learning (PBL). This integrated approach aims to reinforce the connection between theoretical foundations and practical application in software engineering. This paper examines, implements, and refines teaching cases designed to cultivate application-oriented talents in software engineering. Using the School of Computer Science at Guangdong University of Education as a case study, this paper investigates the integration of the OBE-PBL teaching model in the instruction of software engineering. A moderately challenging library management system case was developed to span the entire course. Analysis of the 2024-2025 software engineering course revealed achievement scores of 0.79 and 0.78 for the two classes, respectively, indicating positive teaching outcomes. These findings suggest that the proposed case holds valuable implications for advancing pedagogical reforms in software engineering education.
