Abstract

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies, traditional offline teaching models are no longer sufficient to meet the demands of modern education. Online learning and blended teaching have become crucial pathways for the deep transformation of education. However, the need to improve student outcomes in online learning environments has emerged as a key factor influencing learning outcomes of online learning and blended teaching. This study aims to explore how university students’ online motivation impacts their online learning outcomes through the mediating role of learning engagement. A survey method was employed, with 1,049 university students from Guangdong Province, China, as the research subjects. The focus was on analyzing their motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes during the online learning process. Structural equation modeling was used for an in-depth analysis of the relationships among these variables. The findings reveal that (1) online learning motivation has a significant positive effect on online learning engagement; online learning engagement has a significant positive effect on online learning outcomes. (2) Online learning motivation significantly predicts online learning outcomes, and this relationship is strengthened through the mediating effect of online engagement. Specifically, university students with high online learning motivation are more likely to significantly enhance their online learning engagement, thus promoting substantial improvements in online learning outcomes. This study provides theoretical support and practical guidance for online education, suggesting that online platforms should strengthen platform construction to create a conducive learning environment. Meanwhile, educators should offer more interactive learning opportunities to increase student participation, thereby enhancing students’ motivation and engagement in online learning, which will, in turn, enhance learning outcomes.
