- Abstract
Approximately 1% of people suffer from bipolar disorder (BD), a mental condition characterized by mood swings between two extreme emotional states: mania and depression. Although extensive research has explored the manifestations, causes, and treatments of BD, further investigation is needed concerning genetic mechanisms and the long-term effects of treatments. This essay conducts a thorough review of over twenty articles, including review articles, case studies, and research papers, and examines the manifestations and treatments of BD based on these sources. The essay finds that patients with BD exhibit difficulties in mood regulation and cognitive deficits. ECT and certain types of CBT are effective in treating BD over a three-to-six-month period, while the long-term effects remain to be established. The ongoing efficacy of these treatments should be the focus of future studies. This study is important because it summarises the most recent research on the causes and therapies of bipolar disorder, offering fresh perspectives to guide therapeutic practice. Furthermore, it promotes the creation of more individualised and sustainable intervention strategies by drawing attention to the knowledge gap about long-term therapy effects.
