- Abstract
The link between health and the economy has been well-documented in existing literature. However, prior research on this topic has yielded divergent findings regarding how population health specifically impacts economic outcomes, lacking a definitive consensus. This study addresses this gap by comprehensively accounting for all underlying factors influencing the relationship between local population health and economic performance. Based on World Bank Indicators data spanning 1960 to 2023, the empirical results demonstrate the following: (1) An improvement in local population health levels corresponds to subsequent economic growth, whereas a deterioration in health (e.g., rising mortality rates) is associated with a corresponding economic decline. (2) The effect of changes in health levels on economic outcomes is markedly stronger in developed nations compared to developing nations. (3) Underlying mechanisms drive this relationship: local healthcare standards, educational attainment, and gender equality levels each exhibit significant moderating effects on the impact of health on economic performance. In light of these findings, policy-makers should consider mediating factors such as regional healthcare quality, educational attainment, and gender equality to gain a deeper understanding of local economic performance. Strategically addressing these factors can also contribute positively to local economic development.
