- Abstract
This article will explore what Ma and Weiss have termed the ‘rallying around the flag effect’, which ‘frames the protests as a foreign-backed threat to national sovereignty and social stability’, with the aim of uniting public opinion. In addition to their investigations, the author argues that cuteness also function as a form of ‘rallying around the flag’. In the case of Anti-ELAB, a typical cuteness narration is “A Zhong Gege” and “Guangtou Liu sir”. However, limited research has been conducted on how such narratives are integrated by a particular group of media agencies to frame a social movement. This article aims to explore the relationship between state media narrations (independent variable) and public opinion (dependent variable), which the author argues that there is a potential correlation between them.
