The Impact of Import Trade Liberalization on Firm Innovation: from the Perspective of Import Upstream Degree and Competitiveness

Abstract

During the critical period of profound changes in the global economic pattern and China’s economic transformation, innovation has become the core driving force of China’s high-quality economic development, and the relationship between international trade and technological innovation has attracted much attention. Based on the heterogeneous firm trade theory, this paper explores the relationship between import trade liberalization and firm innovation, and introduces import upstream degree and industry competitiveness to explore their mediating effect. The study found that trade liberalization through intermediates and final products imported tariff significantly promote enterprise innovation, by cutting costs, increase competition, such as channels, technology spillovers, intermediates and final products lower tariffs promoted enterprise innovation ability. The mediating effect test shows that import upstream degree and firm competitiveness play a mediating role in the relationship between import trade liberalization and firm innovation. Heterogeneity analysis showed that high profitability, high participation in export enterprises, import trade liberalization to the innovation to promote a more significant. The research conclusions of this paper provide a good reference for the government to further optimize the innovation policy support system and better use import trade liberalization to promote innovation development.
