- Abstract
Tourism development in underdeveloped regions presents a paradox: while it offers a pathway to economic revitalization through employment, market stimulation, and infrastructure improvements, it also generates significant challenges to sustainability. This study adopts a multidisciplinary approach combining economic analysis, case study, and visual art interpretation to examine tourism’s dual impact in Mainland China, focusing on Guizhou Province. It reveals how tourism drives growth while exacerbating issues such as foreign capital-driven economic leakage, governance strain, environmental degradation, and cultural commodification. The study emphasizes the critical role of central government intervention in mitigating these challenges through policy tools that support equitable capital distribution, cultural and ecological preservation, and diversification into complementary sectors. A reflective screen print artwork visually captures these layered tensions, underscoring the need for vertically integrated, state-led governance to ensure tourism serves as a sustainable and inclusive development strategy.
