- Abstract
Objective: China launched the UNESCO Project on Education for Environment Population and Sustainable Development (EPD) in 1998. That means the beginning of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in China. Sustainable Development Goals are addressed in policy documents, and lots of ESD related literature has been released over more than 20 years. The current status and future trends of ESD can be analyzed through bibliometric statistics. Method: Using CiteSpace software to analyze the literature on ESD in the core journals of China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Results and Discussion: The overall volume of publications has shown a turbulent tendency; Small collaborative networks have emerged but a formal large-scale academic community was unavailable; Research hotspots are dynamic and the overall research trend is moving from macro to micro; Environmental Education and Higher Education was the most important research hotpot. It revealed that research topics are becoming more specialized and public policy, technological advances, and societal trends are the main drivers influencing what got researched. Research Implications: As a consequence, the collaboration between authors and cross-institution should be inspired; Ecological Civilization has become a research hotspot and will partially replace Environmental Education and ESD in the discourse context; More attention should be paid to educational practices related to technological advances.
