Abstract

In Hong Kong, many young children receive education in Christian faith-based kindergartens (Education Bureau School Education Statistics Section, 2024). One of the core missions in these schools is to promote children’s spirituality. This study explores the educator and school factors that influence the teachers’ self-efficacy in Christian spiritual education (TSE in CSE). Using hierarchical regression analyses, the findings suggest that three predictors, namely ‘Christian identity’, ‘types of Christian training received’ and ‘school’s religious context created by the school management’ are significantly and positively associated with TSE in CSE. It is recommended that school management should create a good religious atmosphere in schools and provide ample support and guidelines for teachers to conduct CSE. Schools can also consider inviting Christian educators who have a higher TSE in CSE to take up the leading role of the school’s spiritual curriculum, and facilitate teachers’ spirituality and competence in CSE through organizing different religious activities. It is vital for CSE teachers in faith-based schools to receive more Christian training to equip themselves with theological knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and teaching skills in CSE from various training providers such as churches, seminaries and Christian organizations.
