- Abstract
This research explores the development challenges encountered in creating an air hockey-playing robot. The study focused on three key aspects: mallet manipulation, puck detection, and the overall robotic system. In mallet manipulation, issues arose due to motor selection, with the initial servo motors causing mounting difficulties, leading to a shift to a combination of DC and stepper motors. However, these motors faced challenges with power and control, impacting the end effector’s precision and speed. Puck detection methods were also investigated, with Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) and thresholded contour detection considered. SIFT was found slow and error-prone, while contour detection proved more efficient, particularly when optimized. The air hockey playing system, though partially implemented, faced obstacles in component integration, motors, and overall coordination. The research underscores the critical significance of meticulous planning, precise component selection, and sophisticated algorithms in designing successful robotic systems, offering valuable insights for advancing the performance and precision of various robotic applications.
