- Abstract
Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding is widely used in various industries due to its ability to produce high-quality welds. However, a common issue with TIG welding is the lack of sufficient penetration depth, which can compromise the structural integrity and performance of the welded joints. To overcome this issue, advanced welding methods such as ATIG and FBTIG welding have been developed. These techniques improve weld penetration and overall weld quality. However, they also tend to alter the material properties, particularly tensile strength and hardness, which may affect the performance of the welded structures. The objective of this research is to assess the effectiveness of LSP in enhancing the mechanical properties of FBTIG welded joints. The methodology involves subjecting TIG welded specimens to LSP and conducting comprehensive mechanical testing to evaluate changes in tensile strength and hardness. These results are then compared to those of specimens treated with conventional FBTIG welding techniques. Preliminary findings indicate that LSP significantly improves the tensile strength and surface hardness of FBTIG welded specimens. The induced compressive residual stresses from LSP enhance the material’s resistance to mechanical stresses and extend the fatigue life of the welds. These improvements show that LSP can effectively overcome the limited penetration depth of traditional TIG welding, enhancing the performance and durability of welded joints. This study highlights LSP as a useful post-weld treatment for improving the mechanical properties of TIG-welded structures and offers insights for optimizing welding and post-weld practices to achieve better weld quality and reliability in industrial applications.
